4200 Paradise Street
Vernon, TX 76385
The Paradise House is a large residence at 4200 Paradise Street in Vernon, Texas. Before North Texas State Hospital obtained the residence, it was originally constructed as a group home for I.D.D clients of Lubbock State School. When that program discontinued, the home was closed. Rep. Rick Hardcastle worked with the CEO of North Texas State Hospital, Jim Smith, and other mental health/mental retardation officials in Austin to obtain the house. It was a success, now, with much hard work by many, the home is used weekly by families visiting loved ones at North Texas State Hospital.
Family living centers, much like the Paradise House, are common at state hospitals in Texas. Due to the size of the state and the distance families must travel to visit family members who are receiving care at NTSH, assistance in overnight stays is a welcome and needed service. The Vernon Campus of NTSH is unique because it serves patients from throughout Texas and family members must travel extraordinary distances to visit with loved ones.
Paradise House is the only off-campus living center at a state hospital in Texas.
